Why Marriage?
Last week a friend asked on Twitter: “Why do people (aka you) get married?” I didn’t send my response immediately even though I had one almost at once. Instead I sat on it for a while, in part because of other plans and also to give me time to think it over. In the end I went with my original answer, modified to fit in 140 characters. Below is the longer, and probably less poetic answer.
The truth is, aside from the legal benefits my biggest reason to get married is to have a big party with the most important people in our lives; a party celebrating my love for Jordan and his love for me. Yes, I’ll be changing my name and there will be the legal rights we didn’t have before, but I think the wedding is as much for the friends and family as the bride and groom. It’s a chance for them to show their love for us both individually and as a couple and to share in the joy that our love brings us. And when else is a couple actually encouraged to kiss so much in public?
