Why Marriage?

June 18, 2009 by Roxy

Last week a friend asked on Twitter: “Why do people (aka you) get married?” I didn’t send my response immediately even though I had one almost at once. Instead I sat on it for a while, in part because of other plans and also to give me time to think it over. In the end I went with my original answer, modified to fit in 140 characters. Below is the longer, and probably less poetic answer.

The truth is, aside from the legal benefits my biggest reason to get married is to have a big party with the most important people in our lives; a party celebrating my love for Jordan and his love for me. Yes, I’ll be changing my name and there will be the legal rights we didn’t have before, but I think the wedding is as much for the friends and family as the bride and groom. It’s a chance for them to show their love for us both individually and as a couple and to share in the joy that our love brings us. And when else is a couple actually encouraged to kiss so much in public? :-)

Veil and Cake Adventures

Almost a week ago Jordan’s mother came down and we went in search of veil supplies. After we pulled out the wedding dress, took some measurements and looked at the bead-work, we were on our way! Our first stop was Celebration to look at some styles and try to get some ideas. Then we went to Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts and picked up tulle and thread and most of the beading. Next we tried Ben Franklin and found almost everything else. Finally, after meeting Jordan for dinner, we stopped at Michaels and found the illusive clear, smallish rhinestones we still needed.

On Friday, Jordan and I went to Deluxe Cakes and Pastries and The Cottage Bakery & Cafe to taste some cakes. While at Deluxe the idea of a pie wedding was mentioned and we’re really liking the idea. We could spend the same (or less) than we would on a cake and get more variety. We haven’t decided one way or the other yet, but I think we’ll be tasting some pie in the very near future.

Has it been so long?

I know I haven’t updated lately, but I didn’t realize it had been so long already! Sadly I don’t have a lot to update about. Other things have gotten in the way of the wedding planning lately, but hopefully we’ll be getting back on track soon.

The biggest news is that we got our first round of invitations sent out! We’ve already started getting responses, which is awesome. Less awesome is not knowing what to say when someone mentions they’ll be watching the mail and you know they won’t be seeing anything. I hate that, especially when I would love to invite them if I had any more room at the reception venue! Some of them might still get an invitation later this summer but I know I won’t be able to invite them all and it makes me sad.

On Monday Jordan’s mom will be down and hopefully she’ll leave with the materials necessary to make my veil. This is one of the most exciting things for me right now. It makes me giddy to think that I’ll be wearing a veil made specially for me by my future mother-in-law.

We’ve also been looking at catering options for the reception a bit, and right now we’re seriously considering having Panchero’s, combined with some simple things we’ll prepare (or have friends and family prepare). We just have to figure out what those things would be so we know how much Panchero’s we would need.
